The UCLA Richard Hovannisian Endowed Chair in Modern Armenian History is organizing a two-day international hybrid conference entitled “Armeno-Indica: Four Centuries of Familiarity and Friendship,” on March 17 and 18 at UCLA. The conference will celebrate the bicentenary of the founding of Kolkata’s famed Armenian College and highlight the historic relationship between Armenians and India.
The conference will bring together historians from India, Armenia, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States, and feature keynote speaker Professor Sanjay Subrahmanyam. The event will delve into the economic, literary, legal, and cultural ties between Armenians and India, spanning four centuries from the early modern period to the present day.
According to Sebouh David Aslanian, UCLA’s Richard Hovannisian Professor of Modern Armenian History, “India looms large in the Armenian social imaginary.” The country has been the birthplace of many significant Armenian firsts, such as the first Armenian proto-constitution, first Armenian newspaper, first modern Armenian play, and the first Armenian feminist tract.
The conference is co-sponsored by several organizations including the Fowler Museum at UCLA, the Armenian Studies Center at the Promise Armenian Institute at UCLA, the USC Dornsife Institute of Armenian Studies, and the National Association of Armenian Studies and Research. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to learn about the fascinating history between Armenians and India.
