The WHO Urges to Prepare for a Possible New Pandemic

02 Mar 2023

World Health Organization (WHO) epidemiologist Richard Peabody has warned that the world community should prepare for a possible new pandemic caused by bird flu transmitted from person to person.

In an interview with El Pais newspaper, Peabody expressed concerns that the bird flu virus may acquire the ability to spread from person to person, leading to a new pandemic. The new outbreak of bird flu, which has killed millions of wild and domestic birds worldwide, is believed to have begun two to three years ago due to a special strain of the A(H5N1) virus.

Peabody stressed the importance of being vigilant and urged people not to pick up dead or dying birds or other animals. He also highlighted the need for poultry factory workers to be well-protected. According to WHO data, there have been 873 cases of human infection with bird flu recorded worldwide since 2003, resulting in 458 deaths.

The scientific community is currently studying the genetic sequence of these viruses to track them and develop vaccines that will be available in case of need. Peabody’s warning serves as a reminder that pandemics can arise unexpectedly, and we must be prepared to respond quickly and effectively. It is crucial that individuals, governments, and organizations take steps to prevent the spread of the virus and ensure the safety of people and animals.
