Friends of The Armenian People – George And Amal Clooney

George and Amal Clooney are close friends of the Armenian people. The couple is famous for their contribution to the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

In 2015, Amal Clooney represented Armenia in a high-profile European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) case against a Turkish politician who denied the Armenian genocide. Because of this, she was targeted by Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev’s associates who periodically declared that Amal Clooney was Armenian.

During his visit to Armenia in 2016 on the occasion of the 101st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, George Clooney urged to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide. On April 24, 2016, he joined thousands of other people in placing flowers at the Genocide Memorial in Yerevan.

In 2016, the Hollywood actor and the Human Rights Defender also presented the $1 million Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity, which recognizes people who courageously uphold humanitarian values in the face of violence, to an African woman who saved the lives of 30,000 children from ethnic violence in Burundi.

Clooney also teamed up with 100 Lives, an initiative set up by Armenian businessmen and philanthropists Vartan Gregorian, Ruben Vardanyan, and Noubar Afeyan to commemorate those who helped people during the Armenian Genocide and to continue in their spirit by supporting people and organizations that keep the legacy of gratitude alive.
