A joint Polish and Armenian archaeological team has made a fascinating discovery at the Metsamor archaeological site. The team uncovered a tomb from the Late Bronze Age containing two skeletons, a wooden burial, and over a hundred gold and carnelian beads forming three ornate necklaces.
The discovery sheds new light on the history of the site, which was once an important religious and economic center in the Bronze and Early Iron Ages. Metsamor was fortified by a citadel and cyclopean walls, and its economy was based on metallurgical production.
This tomb is particularly significant due to the wealth of artifacts found within, including golden pendants, ceramic vessels, and a unique faience flask imported from the Syrian-Mesopotamian borderland.
Metsamor is a protected archaeological site, and excavations have been carried out there since 1965. This latest discovery adds to a growing body of evidence about the site’s rich history, which includes other examples of gold necklaces and gilded belt fittings with depictions of hunting lionesses.
